A Dad, His Children, and a Road to Freedom
Who is Hillbilly Bo?
I'm just a normal dad. A normal human being who struggles every single day with mental and physical health issues. I have my good days, and Lord knows I have my bad ones. But no matter what yesterday brought, I wake up every morning reminding myself that today is a new day, a new beginning, and another chance to keep going.
My children have been through more than any child should have to experience.
When their biological mother and I separated, they spent a week or two at a time with her before eventually coming to live with me full-time. Later, their stepmother came into our lives and took them under her wing as if they were her own.
But along the way, there were fights, arguments, yelling, screaming, name-calling, and times when they watched someone they loved walk out the door. Until one day, that door closed on our relationship for the final time.
And through it all, my children were left trying to understand why the family they loved kept changing. I could see how those experiences affected their sense of being loved and wanted.
As their dad, that broke my heart.
I've watched the tears fall. I've seen the hurt in their eyes. I've held them while they cried over things they had absolutely no control over.
But there was one moment that changed everything for me.
My daughter broke down in my arms, crying. I saw tears pouring down my son's face. I saw my youngest daughter struggling with the feeling that something she once had was now gone.
And standing there, holding my children, I realized something.
They didn't need another promise about how things might get better. They needed their dad to help make things better.
That's when I knew it was time for a new chapter.
Not to erase our past. Not to pretend the hurt never happened. But to give my children something new to look forward to. New places to see, new experiences to share, new memories to make, and most importantly, more time together as a family.
I want my children to know that no matter how many times life knocks us down, we don't have to stay down.
I want them to know what a father's love looks like. Not just through words, but through being there, listening, showing up, and making them a priority.
So what does Road to Freedom mean to me?
It means more than an RV. More than traveling across the country. More than leaving behind four walls.
It means giving my children opportunities to see things they've never seen, experience things they've only dreamed about, and laugh together again.
But most importantly?
It means giving my children their daddy back.
The dad who wants to spend his days making memories with them. The dad who wants to hear their laughter instead of watching their tears fall. The dad who knows he can't change yesterday but can work every day to make tomorrow better.
Maybe I should have made some of these changes years ago. I can't get that time back.
But I can make the time we have ahead of us count.
I'm not a perfect father. I've made mistakes. I've struggled. I've cried. I've questioned myself more times than I can count.
But there's one thing I will never stop doing.
Loving my children and fighting to give them a life filled with love, laughter, and memories they'll carry long after I'm gone.
That's who Hillbilly Bo is.
Just a dad who loves his kids.
And this is our Road to Freedom.
